Monkey to Millions [APPLICATIONS OPEN!] - New Show & Podcast Coming - Free Mentorship + more
** LATEST UPDATE: MONKEY TO MILLIONS IS NOW LIVE. CHECK IT OUT HERE**
**UPDATE: APPLICATION FORM IS OPEN NOW!!!!...and closing soon (offers to initial group are out soon)**
Fellow WSO Primates, I've been thinking of how we've been putting out a ton more AMAs + podcasts, etc lately and I want to double down on that since it seems like it's going well and we're able to get a lot more high-quality content out on a weekly basis.
So I had an idea for a new show and wanted to see if you'd be interested in listening/watching this. Here's the concept:
* Release a new Pod/Youtube show called "Monkey to Millions" where I (or one of our mentors) take students or young finance professionals and mentor them over a ~6-24 month time period as they are entering a transition period (trying to land an IB internship, trying to break into PE or HF, etc)
* In exchange for free mentorship, free courses, free resume review, etc the student or mentee agrees to let us track their progress through a series of video calls/pods (say 6 calls over 6 months or 12 calls over 12 months or even 24 calls over 24 months depending on how young the mentee is and how far away they are from that pivot/goal)
* We're playing with the idea of keeping the mentees anonymous, but we also see a ton of value being gained if mentees did this out in the open (allows for screen share content for us to dive into their resume / linkedin tactics, etc) + short 3min video updates each week from the mentees in between the more formal / longer mentor calls.
The goal here would be to give a front-row seat over a longer time frame of the struggles and triumphs of real-life monkeys that are really struggling to land a job or land a job they like (vs just interviewing successful monkeys that have made it like the current pod)
Thoughts? Do you think some hard grinders from non-targets and/or other primates would be interested in this? I think it would actually be really interesting to get a front-row seat of what other candidates are doing, what works, what doesn't, how I advise them, tactical shit, etc...
Thoughts?!? Would you guys watch/listen to a show like this?
Dec 2019 UPDATE: Ok, it's almost here....
it's like the apprentice... but better
I would love to listen to this and be a part of it if possible too!
awesome.
i'd like to be a part of it! would be interesting in following as well
I really, really like this idea.
thanks man, means a lot coming from you. now the hard part - the logistics and executing!
-Patrick
Sounds great- looking forward to this!
Great idea from both an entertainment and educational standpoint. I don't think you'll have trouble finding volunteers.
how do you think people would qualify? would it just be a random thing or would there be a screening process
i think there would be some form of application. I'd love to help people that come from less and/or are disadvantaged (not a requirement, but at least somewhat).
Us helping a student with a 4.0 at a top Ivy with parents on Wall St won't be very compelling content... :-)
That being said, I think it would only work and be great content if the mentees really buy-in and do the work. We'll be working on some sort of application for this next week.
This is dope - you should definitely consider doing this.
I’ll take the right prospective monkey looking to break into technology sales. Let me know
I would 100% apply to be a part of this and would also view this as highly valuable insights as a listener if not selected.
This should definitely happen.
I think this is an awesome concept. I know I would love to listen, and participate if possible. I do think that your thoughts about it being with “non targets” is a good one. Even if I couldn’t be a part of he actual podcast recording, I would love to help in anyway possible.
applications open :)
Not sure how I would personally feel about putting my identity out there, but as a viewer it sounds very entertaining, especially so if the series can help the viewers out as well. For example, if they can take the advice given to the mentee assuming they're in similar situations (let's say they're both non-targets gunning for IB for example), and learn from the teachings and progress of the mentee.
yeah, I think if the person is naturally humble/hardworking, I don't see identity as a big issue (we will go to some lengths to remove last name, etc). I understand the hesitation, but I rather find a kid that is open to sharing and sees us as his/her best shot (maybe a kid from a community college or from the middle of nowhere).
I know that when the more senior members of this forum hear about inspiring stories or a kid that just needs a break, they often reach out to lend a helping hand... so my bigger concern is that the platform gives the kids involved an unfair advantage and people attribute their success to that (and not the process). Been thinking about ways to minimize this :-)
.
applications open, yes, we're open/flexible
that would be an amazing program.
Hopefully you can make it like the Joe Rogan experience ... but for finance
yes, it will be a lot of work but I also think it will be very rewarding personally and hopefully very useful/engaging for the community as well :-)
Sounds great. Good idea.
Would be also interesting to see the typical IB hustle (attention to detail in each sentence, CV, CL etc) and networking applied to a different industry. E.g. medicine, psychology, art, HR, music, etc. Not sure how it can be executed though
maybe Season 3 ;-)
This sounds incredible; how do you plan to account for the roughly 20-30% of the WSO population that isn't gunning for IB/PE/HF?
The career goals for RE, CO, AM, etc are all probably much more different and not as concretely defined as getting an internship, finding the FT role, transitioning, etc.
Curious about this; might consider getting involved
I think that a lot of the same rules and best practices apply across industries (especially for entry level roles)...so I could easily see me taking on a mentee in one of those other niches and still having a lot of success with them.
That being said, I may tap one of our 300 mentors that has more specific niche expertise to do some sessions with the mentee as well to make sure they are getting everything they need...
This sounds promising. Some trial and error and this could be pretty cool.
Thanks Peg Leg, we're working on it now as we review applications coming in :-)
I love the idea and willing to participate but I'm extremely hesitant to share my identity. The risk premium pay-off for sharing your identity is completely skewed in my opinion. Financial firms do not like this kind of stuff. Doesn't matter how much better of a candidate you can become via this program, it could equally well ruin your career.
I can see this side of things for sure. I think the risk-reward payoff really depends if we start working with someone who is a freshman and doesn't have the means or connections vs a mentee that is already at a good school and has already landed an internship, etc.
I'd encourage you to apply anyways, because we haven't 100% for sure decided that it must be public who you are -- although we are definitely leaning that way.
Thanks, Patrick
Thanks for the response Patrick. I will certainly apply!
Happy to help any students in Europe applying for IB SA
.
Thanks man, long way to go
I'm WELL past your target audience for something like this, but I think it's a really cool idea.
If you ever expand to Corp Fin type roles I'd consider being a mentor.
we definitely have some great Corp fin mentors right here: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/wall-street-mentors-finance-mock-interv…
happy to have you on board. I think for at least these first few mentees as part of this show, I'll be doing the mentoring, but once we get the system down, I could see us expanding this...
This could be an awesome program. this should definietely happen.
I'm pretty excited by this. I've just had the WSO notification for this pop up and clicked on autopilot as usual for anything remotely interesting. This time it fully changed my mood, instead of constantly reading things about high flying universities and cut-throat hiring, this is definitely something new and important for those who are trying extremely hard to break in with the odds stacked against them... Looking forward to hearing more.
In terms of the identity issue, I think it would be a fair exchange and many students have nothing to lose. I wouldn't know for sure but many firms seem to be looking for ways to reduce scrutiny for exclusive hiring, so I doubt it would negatively impact a career?
That's my thinking as well. we aren't taking kids who are already set up and have a high likelihood of success. We will purposely try and take kids who have very little to nothing to lose and a lot more to gain :-)
I think it makes for a much more interesting show
Even if they fail, it will still serve as a sobering reminder of how hard it really is
If they make it, awesome - will be a really fun watch...
Completely down to view/participate. Putting my identity out there, not so much.
if you're open to participating, please apply and you can indicate that you're not open to sharing identity in the application
Just did. Can shoot you a message on LI if you want to connect the two, even though I included the URL in the app.
Let's say you apply and you're not where you want to be in your career, if you put this info out there current employers may see it. Of course, identities could be revealed at a later time as they become ready to make the jump from their current roles.
Average Joe, Me, would be down to grind and participate, but I don't know if I am too average or even below average. Average Joe's are the ones that inspire other Average, Below-average, and Above Average Joes.
I think its an amazing idea and a win-win situation. In fact, I would prefer hearing to people in the process vs people who have already made it !
Love it. This will create so much additional dialogue on the sideline of each episode/series. It will really capture in one sitting what so many of the veteran monkeys would scour the site and piece together on this site for in their early days.
Is google the only way to apply?
WallStreetOasis.com How and when will candidates know if they have been selected? Will there be additional interviews for the program past the application?
I'll be inviting candidates to a short call to discuss process and responsibilities before the end of August when applications will close. Goal right now is to select 3 or 4 for our initial cohort. invites will start coming before end of week!
Super exciting!
Very cool. Would love the chance to help/participate - rising undergrad senior
Fascinating idea.
I can see it being entertaining to follow a monkey thru their job hunt hurdles, but less so once they actually get a job.
At that point it's more of "I'm tired, I am struggling with the modeling, I would like a nap and a shower"
How about someone who's a year out of undergrad and still undecided as to what career path to pursue? If I need help setting my goals before seeking help pursuing them, would I be a good fit for this? Either way, that would be a very interesting reality show!
can't hurt to apply! :-)
I'm currently a second year analyst and would like to start my own investment bank just like Hiter Harris and Christopher Williams did for Harris Williams & Co., when they were aged 25 and 23 respectively.
Do you have a mentor for me or anyone I can run my idea by? I always thought an exit to a hedge fund would be exciting work and I still do, but I think banking is actually a great long-term career path.
When do apps close? Def want to apply
End of August.
Initial phone invites have been sent out but applications are open for another 10 days. If you did not receive a phone invite yet, it does not mean you are rejected -- these are on a rolling basis and I'm being careful to make sure we find the right people for this. Stay tuned for updates!
How many applications have you received so far?
I saw that the google form was still open and submitted an application. Here's hoping it's still rolling!
First cohort is being finalized this week - not sure when second would begin though...
This application form will be open/ongoing since even once the initial cohort starts, once one of them lands a position and/or there is a natural break, we may start adding more and going back into the candidate pool...
So you can see it as "rolling" admissions now :-)
Hello Patrick, is there any kind of confirmation supposed to come through to show it has been received? Thanks
Just came across this - are applications still open? I think I'd be a good fit - new joiner at a top Strategy consulting firm!
