River cruises are very popular, and we find many of the people in our Untours community of travelers enjoy them. Whether Untourists add a cruise to their Untour or spend some of their trips abroad sailing the rivers, they can find a fantastic selection of offerings on our Untours Ventures site.

The Danube is one of our most popular destinations, and we partner with Viking and AmaWaterways to offer cruises there. Here are some of the highlights.

Durnstein is a picture-perfect town on the banks of the Danube in Austria. It is one of the most popular towns along the Danube, its cobbled streets lined with historical buildings like its late gothic town hall, New Castle, and the ruins of the Convent of Poor Clares.

A castle looms above Durnstein, in the heart of the Wachau region, one of Austria’s most important wine growing regions. The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visitors can tour vineyards and enjoy guided tastings of the local wines.

Spitz is another town along the Danube in the historic and beautiful Wachau Valley. Its formation dates back to Celtic times, and this prim, vineyard-laced village wears its history proudly.

Linz is another favorite stop for those cruising the Danube. Its town center is a treasure trove of beautiful architecture, including its baroque town hall and old cathedral. Visit the town’s picturesque main square, its Castle Museum, and the old town. Or cross the river for some modern art. There’s something for everyone in Austria’s 3rd largest city.

The riverside town of Melk is dominated by its rightfully famous and popular Benedictine abbey, founded in the 11th century. The buildings you will visit today date from the early 18th century and are build in the baroque style. You can tour the abbey church, with its impressive frescoes. The library at Melk Abbey (pictured above) is lavish, housing a treasure trove of medieval manuscripts.

There is so much to see and do in Vienna, we don’t know where to begin. Fortunately, your cruise will include a guide to take you on a tour of the city, giving you a good overview and the tools for further exploration. AmaWaterways also offers guests an option of a guided bike ride around town. If you are fit and active, it is an interesting way to take in the city’s spread of palaces, gardens, and museums.
