Oronasal Fistula

Dr. med. vet Almut Reinicke referred a non-healing oronasal fistula in a 20-year-old mare to Dr. Richard Miller DVM, an equine dental specialist from Coto de Caza, California.  This fistula was the result of an extraction of 206 fractured premolar discovered on a routine dental exam.

Oronasal fistulas are typically challenging to heal and present as non-healing wounds.  On July 4, 2018, Dr. Miller used an EquusCell StemWrap 5x5cm bio-bandage to provide a bioscaffold for the wound.  The main preparation of the site required vigorous rasping of the fistula to remove all epithelial lining.  Then, the StemWrap amnion sheet was rolled up and inserted into the extraction site and held in place with impression material.
Recheck of the the fistula happened two weeks later on Wednesday, July 26th, 2018 by Dr. Reinicke.  She found pink, healthy tissue, firm to the touch, no nasal discharge. Dr. Reinicke said, “It looked perfect! See the picture!”  She further stated about the potential of use in challenging non-healing wounds, “I am really excited about the desiccated amnion sheet.”  Commenting about the procedure, Dr. Miller said, “The first one we did was on July 4 and the primary provider vet says there is no more nasal discharge!  So we take that as a success!”
