Eating Ireland with Jackie Johnson

Foodie guide to Ireland

Jackie Johnson is a regular on our Ireland Untour and has been generous with her photos and reports from the road. In her first dispatch from her most recent Kenmare sojourn, she shared the ups and downs of her travels.

She also shared so many excellent food photos, I circled back and asked her for her thoughts on eating in Ireland. She reports what I have heard so many locals say in Ireland: Irish food is very good, and it has moved well beyond beef stew! Here’s a rundown of Jackie’s culinary adventures.

Pub Grub & Other Fare

Don’t believe anyone who says the food is not good in Ireland. Everywhere we ate it was outstanding. This is a meal we had in Dungarvan.

Here is my cousin’s lunch at the Fish Box in Dingle. We highly recommend this place.

And, of course, excellent fish and chips!

Cork

The English Market in Cork was packed full of locals shoppers buying their fresh groceries. Cork is a bit of a foodie destination with great restaurants too.

Shopping in the English Market in Cork. I wish I had some of that brown bread loaded with Irish butter right now.

Kenmare Foodie Tour

We had signed up for a Kenmare Foodie Tour before we left home. Here we are at Maison Gourmet with the tour leader, Kenmare Foodie Karen Coakley. We highly recommend this tour, especially if you like to eat.

A part of the Kenmare Foodie Tour was a walk through Wednesday’s street market.

Coffee was brewed for us in a siphon while on the Foodie Tour in Kenmare.

You can’t leave out Kenmare Ice Cream in the Foodie Tour.

Check out County Kerry on the Ireland Untour and enjoy the local food scene in and around Kenmare, from fresh seafood on the Beara Peninsula to heart stews and pub grub, artisan bakeries, locally made aged cheddar, and farm-to-table fare. So many wonders, even in the banal aisles of your supermarket there, you can strike gold or find new favorites.
