Another key takeaway from our table discussion: managing and governing a nonprofit organization is just as challenging as managing and governing a for profit entity – if not more so. My esteemed colleagues called out some of the most significant constraints and challenges faced by nonprofit executives and boards as compared to their for-profit counterparts: -- Mission: 501(c)(3) nonprofits must be organized and operated exclusively for an exempt charitable purpose. Revenues cannot benefit private interests, and political and lobbying activities are limited. These tax-driven restrictions have implications for strategic planning, revenue generation and overall operations (including talent recruitment and retention). -- Dependency on donations and grants. Many nonprofits rely on donations, grants and fundraising efforts to fund operations. Managing the uncertainty of such funding sources and donor relationships adds a layer of complexity to financial planning and sustainability that for profit entities do not face. In addition, such funds may be restricted in their application. -- Stakeholder diversity. Unlike “regular” corporations where fiduciary duties are aimed at maximizing stockholder value, nonprofits serve diverse stakeholder groups, including beneficiaries (clients, customers, program participants), donors and grant providers, volunteers, board members and the community at large. So, for anyone who might underestimate the difficulty of running, managing or governing a nonprofit, think again!
