With 15 votes against and 9 in favor, the reforms to the Constitution that would allow same-sex marriage in Yucatan were rejected in the State Congress for the second time.
From the first hours of this Monday, July 15, hundreds of people began to arrive at the Legislative Power of the state headquarters, to demonstrate in favor and against this initiative that was rejected just last April 10 in a secret ballot by the local representatives.
However, after the insistence of activist groups and the parliamentary faction of the Movimiento Ciudadano political party, the reform was returned to committees and from there it reached the plenary session of the local Congress once again.
The expectation of this new voting, triggered the #YaesHoraYucatán hashtag all over the internet, and it became trending topic on social networks this morning, with more than 3,200 interactions.
However, with 9 votes in favor and 15 against, the congress decided to reject the marriage between people of the same sex, for the second time in 3 months.
As it did not reach the third parts of the Congress, it is considered a “totally concluded” issue.
As soon as the decision was announced, shouts of “cowards”, “cowards”, “cowards” and other slogans against legislators by members of the lesbian community were heard.
After this resolution, the deputies went to recess.
