Emergency Appeal:A 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Azad Jammu and Kashmir leaving 37 dead and injuring more than 500 as rescue and recovery operations are underway. The epicenter was in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and tremors could be felt as far as the capital city Islamabad some 55 kilometers away.

Helping Hand USA is launching its “Kashmir Earthquake Relief Fund” to assist families affected by this devastating earthquake. As an intital response Helping Hand Pakistan Emergency Team (ERT) is in Mirpur providing:

- 200 tents
- Mosquito nets
- Tarpaulin sheets
- 2,000 bottles of clean drinking water

Situation on The Ground: Government officials are providing updates to NGOs regarding the earthquake that has killed mostly women and children as recovery operations continue. Homes and buildings to continue to collapse and doctors are treating quake victims in open areas outside the main hospital in Mirpur. Giant cracks in the roads have cause heavy damage to busses and resulted in numerous accidents.
