Located close to the waterways of the Sine Saloum Delta, with its wonderful birdlife, Fathala lies amongst some 6,000 hectares of protected forest. A stay here offers a fabulous introduction to African wildlife. While there is no guarantee what you might see on any particular day, on a safari drive you are likely to spot zebra, warthogs, giraffe, rhino, antelopes and more. While nature walks through the trees are excellent opportunities to observe the smaller animals including a plethora of birds.
Fathala is also home to a breeding herd of the rare Giant Derby Elland. This striking antelope with spiral horns is one of the largest in the world. Sadly it is only found in the wild in one location and the work Fathala, together with Bandia Wildlife Reserve further north in Senegal is crucial for this subspecies’ survival.
The luxury safari tents are on a raised platform with wooden floors, a four-poster bed with mosquito net, ensuite facilities including a bath and outdoor shower and a small terrace. The animals in the reserve are free to wander right up to the tents should they wish to.

Fathala can easily be combined with any of our hotels in The Gambia with Mandina Lodges being a popular choice. The reserve is reached by a short drive and 40-minute ferry crossing. The ferry ride is a colourful experience in itself. It is recommended that you spend at least your first and last nights in The Gambia due to the slightly erratic ferry timetable. Delays at the ferry as well as the border can sometimes mean the relatively short journey may take up to four hours.
Available excursions include safari drives, bush walks, a sunset river cruise and a visit to local villages.
Unaccompanied walks outside of the lodge grounds are not permitted.
